Turning Pandemic Waste into Sustainable Design – Joe Slatter’s Veil Stool

When the world masked up during the pandemic, billions of disposable face coverings became part of our daily lives. But what happened after they were discarded? British designer Joe Slatter saw an opportunity to transform this waste into something meaningful.
His creation, the Veil Stool, is crafted from 4,000 discarded face masks collected from London’s streets. Each mask was disinfected, quarantined in sunlight, and then processed into two forms: spun into yarn and melted into dense polypropylene. The result is a striking stool that embodies both protection and pollution — a reminder of the pandemic’s dual legacy.
Why It’s Sustainable
Upcycling Waste: Masks, made of polypropylene and polyester, are notoriously difficult to recycle. Slatter’s design proves they can be repurposed into durable furniture.
