Maxime Louis-Courcier’s Earth-Paper Air Conditioners
French designer Maxime Louis-Courcier has reimagined cooling with his Earth-Paper Air Conditioners — a passive, sustainable system that uses natural materials and smart science instead of electricity-hungry machines.
The design is built from paper-clay composites woven into tapestry-like wall coverings. Inside, tubes filled with phase-changing materials (PCMs) — bio-based fatty acids — absorb heat when temperatures rise above 25°C. Each module weighs around 10 kg, can be easily hung on walls, and is modular, meaning multiple units can be lined up to cover larger spaces.
As the PCMs melt during the day, they absorb heat and turn transparent, revealing a subtle blue pattern. At night, they solidify again, ready to repeat the cycle. This creates a continuous loop of cooling without electricity.
How It Works
Heat absorption: PCMs melt at ~25°C, pulling heat out of the air.
