Earth Tub – Sustainability Rooted in Township Innovation

The Earth Tub concept is the result of research and observation in the peri-urban environments of Western Cape townships, where communities face challenges of waste management, food security, and limited infrastructure. By studying local practices and constraints, designers created a solution that is both practical and deeply connected to its environment.
How It Works
The Earth Tub is a composting and growing unit designed for small spaces.
Organic waste from households is deposited into the tub.
The tub transforms waste into nutrient-rich compost.
Vegetables and herbs can be grown directly in the same unit, closing the loop between waste and food.
Why It’s Sustainable
Reduces landfill waste by turning organic scraps into compost.
Supports food security in peri-urban communities.
Encourages circular living by linking waste management with food production.
Scalable and adaptable for township households and beyond.
The Earth Tub demonstrates that sustainability doesn’t always require high-tech solutions—it thrives when design is rooted in local observation, cultural context, and community needs
