Luminetta: Turning Parking Time into Power
Passenger cars spend most of their lives parked. Clemson University’s Deep Orange 17 project flips that downtime into an energy advantage. Developed by graduate Automotive Engineering students with BMW of North America, the fully functional prototype “Luminetta” is wrapped in 1,781 photovoltaic cells.
These solar panels harvest energy while driving and continue charging when stationary, transforming every sunlit moment into part of the EV’s cycle. By reimagining idle hours as productive ones, Luminetta points toward a future where cars are not just consumers of energy but contributors to sustainable mobility.
