Smartchitecture – Mobility as Architecture

A new paradigm in mobility design
Yida Li’s Smartchitecture reimagines the automobile not just as transport, but as a living space. Conceived during his Bachelor’s thesis at Pforzheim University and backed by Mercedes-Benz Design, the project transforms the Smart car platform into a driverless aluminum pod that merges RV functionality, tent-like adaptability, and Bauhaus-inspired aesthetics.
Key Features
Circular cabin with a transparent round roof offering uninterrupted panoramic views.
Aluminum exterior and geometric rims for durability and aerodynamic performance.
Sofa-like seating curved to match the cabin’s body, with adjustable headrests.
Wooden flooring with ventilation grilles, blending natural materials with modern engineering.
Inspired by Bauhaus architecture and the Chinese concept of yuanlin (“round forest”), reflected in soft curves, natural tones, and openness.
Why It Matters
Smartchitecture challenges conventional automotive design by asking: What if cars were extensions of our living spaces? It’s not just mobility — it’s smart architecture on wheels, hinting at a future where cars become modular, sustainable habitats.
